Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is a detailed list of actions to ensure the end to nuclear weapon activities. Participants must not pursue actions in developing, testing, producing, acquiring, possessing, stockpiling, using or threatening to use nuclear weapons. Proactive measures were also created to that signatories are obliged to prevent and suppress any activity prohibited under the TPNW. The treaty, with the hopes that all nations would sign, would see an end to the 12,100 nuclear warheads in existance.
For some counties, nuclear weapons are the highest form of deterrent. A “If our enemies have them, and we don’t…whats stopping them from using them” mindset would prevent many world leaders from agreeing to sign the TPNW. This would major world powers including the United States.
With the lack of confidence in American leadership, demonstrators protest outside of the United Nations Headquarters to show the dire need of a nuclear treaty.
